Maharashtra: Feasibility study on water taxi routes in MMR presented; estimated capital cost Rs 2,500 crore
While Rs 2,500 crore was estimated as the capital cost, for the upgrade of existing water transport terminals, the estimated cost is Rs 5 crore per terminal

A techno-economic feasibility study for water taxis in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was submitted to the state government, detailing 10 routes spanning 252 km with a capital cost of Rs 2,500 crore.
• Kochi Water Metro drafted the report, which was presented to Ports Minister Nitesh Rane.
• Upgrading existing water transport terminals is estimated to cost Rs 5 crore per terminal.
• The proposed routes include:
Narangi to Kharwadeswari near Virar (1 km)
Vasai to Mira Bhayandar–Fountain Junction–Gaimukh–Nagale (16 km)
Kalher to Kolshet–Mulund–Aeroli–Vashi–DCT–Gateway (50 km)
Gaimukh to Kolshet–Kalher–Mumbra–Kalyan (31 km)
New airport to Belapur–Vashi (14 km)
Vasai to Marve–Nariman Point (61 km)
Borivali to Gorai–Essel World–Marve–Manori (6 km)
Rewas to Karanja–Gateway (19 km)
Belapur to Gateway–Mandwa (38 km)
Gateway to Elephanta–Nhava (17 km)
The meeting included discussions on introducing additional water taxi routes along Mumbai’s Western seafront.
The government intends to increase the number of routes before proceeding with the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
