A tragic incident claimed the life of Dr. Walter Foxcroft, a 43-year-old physical therapist, when a flash fire erupted in his hyperbaric chamber at Havasu Health and Hyperbarics in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Firefighters discovered his body inside the chamber on Wednesday and pronounced him dead at the scene. No one else was injured. The Lake Havasu City Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

Hyperbaric chambers, which deliver high levels of oxygen to treat damaged tissues by pressurizing the environment two to three times above normal, are a key tool in medical therapy, per the Mayo Clinic.

Foxcroft, who moved to Lake Havasu as a teenager in 1998, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona, where he served as a sports mascot. He later became the Arizona Cardinals’ mascot, Big Red, and joined the team at the 2006 Super Bowl. He earned a doctorate in physical therapy from Touro University Nevada and, after becoming a certified Functional Medicine Hyperbaric Clinician through the International Board of Undersea Medicine, opened his practice in 2024.
Shannon Kenitz, executive director of the International Hyperbarics Association, confirmed Foxcroft completed their safety training and described him as deeply dedicated to hyperbaric therapy. Friends and colleagues expressed profound sorrow. Grace Echevarria, a close friend, shared her grief, noting her connection to Foxcroft’s family through their daughter’s dance and fine arts classes. Jonathan O’Neill, a fellow physical therapist who trained under Foxcroft, remembered him as compassionate, thorough, and generous, recalling a memorable lunch they shared during his shadowing.
