Maryland Governor Wes Moore, the state’s first Black governor and a combat veteran who served in Afghanistan with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, expressed frustration with President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran-Israel conflict. In a Thursday interview, Moore criticized Trump for a “lack of seriousness” in addressing the escalating Middle East tensions, calling his casual approach to matters of life and death “disappointing.” As a former soldier who risked his life for the country, Moore found Trump’s flippant remarks particularly troubling.

Moore’s comments followed Trump’s vague and provocative statements about potential U.S. involvement in Israel’s military actions against Iran. Trump issued a stern warning to Iran against developing nuclear weapons but remained noncommittal about U.S. military support for Israel, saying, “I might, I might not—nobody knows.” Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader declared that Iran would “never surrender,” rejecting Trump’s demand for Tehran’s unconditional capitulation.

A prominent figure eyed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, Moore, aged 46, stressed the gravity of the situation, noting that “people’s lives are at stake.” He criticized Trump’s “will I, won’t I” rhetoric as unhelpful and inappropriate given the seriousness of the crisis.
In response, White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly defended Trump, stating that Americans elected him because they trust his ability to ensure national security. She reiterated Trump’s firm stance that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons.
